Polestar unveils high-performance electric SUV ‘Polestar 3’
Polestar announced on the 13th that it has released ‘Polestar 3’, a premium electric performance SUV.
According to the company, “Polstar 3” is characterized by applying a new type of profile that maximizes aerodynamic while maintaining the unique characteristics of SUVs. Integrated front aerodynamic wings on the bonnet, aerodynamic wings and rear aerodynamic blades integrated into the rear spoiler maximize aerodynamic performance. In addition, the height (1627mm) and ride height (211mm) were lowered to the highest level in their class. The coefficient of air resistance of Polestar 3 is only 0.29 Cd.
The interior maximizes Scandinavian minimalism. It finished with materials considering eco-friendliness with MicroTech of bio-attributes, leather materials that have been certified for strict animal welfare, and wool materials that can be completely tracked. When the production of the Polestar 3 begins, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is completed, which is continuously updated during the life cycle of the product.
The powertrain is a dual motor system consisting of two electric motors and exhibits performance such as 360kW (489 horsepower) of the system’s maximum output and 840Nm of maximum torque (about 85.7kgf·m). Up to 380 kilowatts (517 horsepower) when performance packs are selected. Its performance will be improved up to 910 Nm (about 92.9 kgf·m).
The new car is equipped with a one-pedal drive that can adjust stages and a dual clutch system that includes an electronic torque vectoring function to support stable driving. The decoupling function of the rear motor may be driven only by the front electric motor to save energy in certain situations.
Paulstar 3 applied adaptive dual-chamber air suspension and active dampers that can electronically adjust dampers in units of two-thousandths of a second (500 1,000) depending on road surface conditions as a basic specification.
The battery capacity is 111kWh, and the longest driving distance after a single charge is 610km based on WLTP in Europe. The lithium-ion battery has a prismatic cell design and is placed in a protective aluminum case with boron steel reinforcement and liquid cooling.
Polestar 3 also supports Bi-directional charging, which can supply power to home or other electric vehicles. The heat pump is also installed as a basic specification.
The Polestar 3 is the first Polestar model to use centralized computing with NVIDIA DRIVE core computers. Nvidia’s high-performance car platform, which acts as an artificial intelligence brain, processes data received from numerous sensors and cameras mounted on the Fallstar 3, enabling advanced driver-assisted safety functions and driver monitoring.
The infotainment system is powered by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.’s next generation ‘Snapdragon Cockpit Platform’. The Snapdragon Cockpit platform is a key component of ‘Snapdragon Digital Chassis’, an open and scalable cloud-based automotive platform, providing high-definition displays, premium-quality surround sound, and smooth connectivity throughout the vehicle.
Among the safety functions, “Indoor radar sensors” detect even minute movements in millimeters in the car and prevent children or pets from being left in the vehicle due to the driver’s carelessness. It is also connected to a climate control system to prevent heat stroke or hypothermia.
The Polestar 3 is equipped with five radar modules, five external cameras, and 12 external ultrasonic sensors to implement various safety functions. In particular, the “Smart Eye,” which was first installed in the Fall Star 3, combines two cameras with excellent eye-tracking technology to monitor the driver’s eyes to detect drowsiness or distraction and support messages, warning sounds, and emergency stop functions.
Android Automotive OS is an operating system jointly developed by Polstar and Google that can be operated through a 14.5-inch central display on the front. This is a step forward in the world’s first automobile Paul Star 2 with Google built-in, providing innovative experiences for large SUV drivers in terms of function and design. Over-the-air (OTA) update function is included, enabling continuous software improvement and introduction of new features without visiting the service center. The domestic sales model will be equipped with a navigation and infotainment system for electric vehicles jointly developed with TMAP.
The Polestar 3 will be produced at the Volvo Motor plant in Chengdu, China, and will gradually increase production from mid-2023. The first customer delivery is expected in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will also be produced at Volvo Motor’s Ridgeville plant in South Carolina in the U.S., and customer delivery is expected after mid-2024.
“The Polestar 3 is a powerful electric performance SUV that stimulates the driver’s senses with its unique Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “We have also taken carbon footprint control in the manufacturing process and expanded Polestar’s production base to the U.S. We are very happy and proud to continue our rapid growth and expand our product portfolio,” he said.
